Agenda: Addressing the Global Ocean Plastic Crisis: Innovative Solutions for Reducing Marine Pollution.
(in lieu of Sea Day on 21st July - 海の日 Special)
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) committee will engage advanced junior delegates from Grades 6 to 8 in English as they address the pressing issue of global ocean plastic pollution, a critical threat to marine biodiversity, coastal economies, and human health. In commemoration of Japan’s Sea Day (海の日), a national observance that underscores the country’s cultural and ecological ties to the ocean, this special session challenges delegates to develop forward-thinking and policy-oriented solutions to the escalating crisis of marine pollution. The agenda encourages participants to critically examine root causes such as unsustainable consumption, inadequate waste management, and international policy gaps, while proposing innovative approaches including technological advancements, strengthened multilateral agreements, and localized, community-driven initiatives. Through this process, delegates will gain insights into the complexity of environmental diplomacy and the UNEP’s pivotal role in coordinating global efforts toward sustainable ocean governance.
